Frequently Asked Questions

Answers about Silva Nix and our specialist golden British breeding programme: Golden Shaded and Golden Point cats in both British Shorthair and British Longhair coats.

Where is Silva Nix located?

Silva Nix is an ANCATS-registered cattery based in South-East Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Our ANCATS registration number is 23985.

What types of British cats does Silva Nix breed?

Silva Nix’s core breeding specialisation is golden British cats across four groups: Golden Shaded British Shorthair, Golden Shaded British Longhair, Golden Point British Shorthair and Golden Point British Longhair. Selected silver lines may also feature in our programme, but golden British Shorthair and British Longhair cats are our primary focus. We do not breed traditional blue, grey or van-pattern cats.

What colours and patterns do British Shorthair and British Longhair come in?

British Shorthair and British Longhair cats are recognised in many colours and patterns. Silva Nix does not attempt to breed every recognised variety. We concentrate on Golden Shaded and Golden Point lines in short-haired and long-haired coats; selected silver lines may also appear within the wider programme.

When will my British Shorthair fully mature and show its final coat colour?

British Shorthair kittens are born with soft baby fur, and their full colour and plush adult coats develop gradually. Their body and coat mature around 3 years old. Males typically reach 6–8kg, while females range between 4–6kg.

Are British Shorthairs good pets?

Absolutely! They are known for their calm, affectionate, and gentle personalities. They are friendly with children and other pets and are low-maintenance, only requiring weekly brushing and regular care.

Are you a registered cattery?

Yes, Silva Nix is proudly registered with the ANCATS (Register Number 23985).

How much does a British Shorthair kitten cost in Australia?

Pricing varies with age, colour, lineage, veterinary inclusions and individual circumstances. Because availability and pricing change, please read our 2026 Australian kitten price guide and contact us for current information.

Do you health test your breeding cats?

Yes. Our breeding cats receive regular veterinary care and breed-relevant health screening. We use DNA testing for applicable inherited conditions, such as PKD. Because there is currently no DNA test that can rule out HCM in British Shorthairs, we do not describe HCM as cleared by DNA testing; cardiac assessment should be discussed with a veterinarian and may include echocardiography. Screening helps inform responsible breeding decisions, but no screening programme can guarantee lifetime health.

How do you socialise your kittens?

From birth, our kittens are raised in a loving family environment. They are introduced to household sounds, human touch, and other pets early on, ensuring they are confident and friendly companions.

Do you provide written sales contracts and health guarantees?

Yes. Each kitten leaves us after 12 weeks with a written contract, a six-month genetic health guarantee, and care instructions. We also conduct interviews to ensure the right match between kitten and family.

How do you ensure your kittens go to the right homes?

We conduct FaceTime, WhatsApp video, or in-person interviews to match each kitten with the right family based on lifestyle and preferences.

Do you provide ongoing support?

Yes! We stay in touch with our families and offer guidance and support as your kitten grows.

If we can no longer care for the cat, do you help re-home it?

Absolutely. If you can no longer care for your cat, we will assist in finding a new loving home.

Do you offer pet insurance?

Yes, we arrange complimentary pet insurance for the first 2 months. You may then continue with the same provider or choose another.
