How British Shorthairs Grow Up?
British Shorthair kittens don't reach full maturity until they're about three years old. As they grow, their coats get thicker and even more plush. Males usually weigh between 6–8 kg, and females between 4-6 kg. It's exciting to watch them grow into their beautiful adult coats and calm personalities.

Why Are British Shorthairs So Popular as Pets?
British Shorthairs have become a favourite for families, singles, and even busy city folks across Australia and it's easy to see why. These cats aren't just cute; they’re calm, friendly, and fit into all kinds of lifestyles.
Calm and Friendly Personality
One big reason people love British Shorthairs is because they are super calm and gentle. They like being close to their humans but don't demand a lot of attention. You might find them sitting next to you on the couch or quietly following you around the house. They’re very patient with kids and usually get along well with other pets too, making them a great choice for families.
If you’re someone who works or studies a lot, a British Shorthair is a good match. They’re happy to relax on their own when you’re busy.
Great for Life in Australia
Many Australians live in apartments or have busy schedules, and British Shorthairs fit right in. They’re happy living indoors and don’t need a ton of space or lots of exercise to stay happy. Give them a few toys, a comfy bed, and some attention each day, and they’re perfectly content.
Because of this, they’re one of the top three most popular cat breeds in Australia!
Cute Looks Without Lots of Work
British Shorthairs are known for their round faces, big eyes, and thick, soft coats they look like real-life teddy bears! They come in lots of colours too, from the classic blue to rare ones like Golden Point and Silver Tipped.
Even though their coats are thick, they don’t need a lot of grooming. A quick brush once a week keeps them looking great. Plus, they’re pretty healthy and strong compared to some other purebred cats.
Long Lives and Good Health
With good care, British Shorthairs can live 12 to 20 years. They’re a tough breed, but it’s still important to feed them well and take them to the vet regularly. Keeping them at a healthy weight helps them stay happy and active for many years.
A Bit of Fun History
Did you know British Shorthairs go all the way back to ancient Rome? They even inspired the Cheshire Cat in "Alice in Wonderland"! Their long history and magical connection to stories make them even more special.
Famous and Easy to Find
Because of their adorable looks and chilled-out personalities, British Shorthairs are super popular on Instagram and TikTok. Luckily, in Australia, you can find healthy, well-raised British Shorthairs from registered breeders like SILVA NIX Cattery.
British Shorthairs are beautiful, kind, independent, and easy to care for. They fit into busy lives, make loyal companions, and bring a lot of joy to their families.
No wonder they’re one of Australia's favourite cats once you meet one, you'll see why!

How much does a British Shorthair kitten cost in Australia?
The price of a British Shorthair kitten can be different depending on a few things. Most kittens cost somewhere between AUD 1,500 and over 4,000.
-
Registered Breeders: Kittens from trusted breeders like SILVA NIX Cattery might cost more because they include things like health checks, vaccinations, and microchipping.
-
Special Colours: Rare colours like Golden Point or Silver Tipped might make the kitten a little more expensive.
-
City Living: In big cities like Sydney or Melbourne, prices might be higher because more people want them.
If a kitten costs under $1,000, be careful. It might mean the kitten hasn't had the best start in life.
Can British Shorthairs live happily indoors?
Definitely! British Shorthairs are great for indoor living.
-
Relaxed and Calm: They love to chill out and don’t need a lot of space.
-
Adaptable: Whether you live in a big house or a small apartment, they’ll fit right in.
-
Safer Inside: Keeping them indoors protects them from traffic, snakes, and other dangers in Australia.
Ways to Keep Them Happy Indoors
- Give them scratching posts and climbing towers.
- Play with them for about 10 to 15 minutes each day.
How old are the kittens when they can go home?
Kittens are ready to join their new families when they are around 12 to 14 weeks old.
- By then, they’ve had their first vaccinations.
- They’ve learned how to eat solid food and use the litter box.
- They’ve also spent enough time with their mums and siblings to learn good behaviour.
If someone is offering kittens younger than 10 weeks, be cautious. Kittens need time to grow and learn properly before leaving their mothers.
Are British Shorthair cats hypoallergenic?
Not exactly. No cat is truly hypoallergenic. British Shorthairs may be a little easier for some allergy sufferers because they don’t shed heavily all year, but they still make proteins that can cause allergies. Learn more about this in our full article: Are British Shorthair Cats Hypoallergenic?
